Gum Disease Detection
During your examination your dentist will carry out a thorough screening to check the health of your gums. If you have noticed bleeding when brushing your teeth this may be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease is caused by a build of plaque bacteria on the gum line. Plaque forms after eating so it is important to brush and floss your teeth regularly! If plaque is left on the gums it will cause bleeding, and in some cases, periodontal (gum) disease.
If you have periodontal disease the gums will detach from the teeth causing a 'pocket' under the gum line where bacteria live. Mild cases of gum disease can usually be treated by maintaining a good level of oral hygiene – brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. More severe gum disease may require a course of deep cleaning by your dentist.
